This year the organisers have set a very precise tone: «Born in Moldova. Built for the World.». And it seems it's no longer about aspiration, but a reality that the ecosystem is starting to move steadily towards.
Not just growth - a change of scale
If you look at the numbers, everything looks like an expected development:
- about 2,000 participants
- 150+ start-ups
- 60+ international speakers
- 50+ investors
- Startup World Cup finals with a prize of $1 mln
But it's not about the numbers. The main change is in the feeling. Every year SMS becomes less and less a «local conference» and more and more an entry point into the global market. This can be seen in the composition of the participants, in the quality of conversations on the sidelines, and in how the focus changes from «how to start» to «how to scale».
People who have already travelled this path
This year, it's not just inspiring stories on stage, but people who have gone from idea to scale.
Sacha Michaud (Glovo) will talk about how to build a product that works in dozens of countries at once.
Bill Reichert will share important information about how investors really make decisions and why most pitches don't work.
Guillermo Sohnlein Emphasises ambition that goes beyond the ordinary and the price that sometimes has to be paid for it.
Attendees will meet experts from Microsoft, Bolt, SeedBlink and other companies who work with growth, markets and products on a daily basis. And this is perhaps the key point - these are not theorists. These are people who have already scaled products and are now sharing how it works in practice.
What really happens at these events
If you've been to conferences like this, you know the value is rarely in the scene. The most interesting things happen between speeches, in the coffee queue, in casual acquaintances. And this is where SMS26 looks stronger than ever.
The organisers are clearly placing a premium not only on content, but also on structured interaction:
- matchmaking through the app Brella
- workshops instead of abstract conversations
- live pitches instead of perfect presentations
This turns the event from a «listen» to a participate.
What the ecosystem looks like in person
A good example is pre-event «What the Duck is a Startup?». The format was as simple yet revealing as possible: 15 Influencers were given a «virtual» $300,000 and the task of choosing a startup in which they would invest. No slides, no scenes, no usual framework. Just a conversation.
And in this format, things that are usually hidden became visible:
- How funders explain their ideas without the «wrapper»
- which projects really appeal to people outside the tech bubble
- how quickly trust is built
The AI, experience and healthtech winners were Clon, Magic Wish and Respiro. But more importantly, all the participants wanted to come to the main summit. This is, in fact, the best indicator of value.
Who it's all for
SMS26 is a rare format where different audiences really cross over.
Funders come for investment and partners. Investors come for new opportunities. Specialists - to understand the market and find the next step. Corporations - not to fall off the innovation agenda.
And that creates the very dynamic that is difficult to reproduce artificially.
Why it's important now
Moldova is still at a point where the ecosystem is taking shape. And it is events like these that determine which way it will develop. Whether it will be a local market for services or a platform for global products.
SMS26 is an attempt to explicitly choose the second option.
Bottom line
Startup Moldova Summit 2026 is not just a conference and not just networking.
This is the place where:
- idea testing
- make connections
- and sometimes even start stories that are called «successful cases».»
And if you're thinking about whether or not to go - the answer is probably already obvious.
Because in a rapidly changing world, the most costly mistake is to stay out of context.
